DAS in the railroad industry: Executing a mission

Distributed Acoustic Sensing has the potential to bring railroad operations to the next level. Recently our colleagues Vivek Caroli and Martin Rosenberger provided insights into existing and potential uses for this exciting technology in the railroad industry, in a well-received webinar hosted by the Fiber Optic Sensing Association.

Vivek Caroli, Managing Director of our US location, and Martin Rosenberger, Product Management Director, presented an intriguing and fact filled webinar via the Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA) on October 25th, 2017. This webinar highlighted the various challenges faced in the railroad industry in the areas of train tracking, safety and security. It discussed the reasons why we chose to pursue development of DAS, its exciting potential, and the wide range of benefits this technology offers.

Simplifying complicated monitoring efforts

The purpose of the webinar was to explore the vastness of the North American railroad system and the challenges faced in monitoring it, as well as to introduce FTS and highlight ways in which it can simplify this complicated monitoring effort. Over 140 people signed up for the webinar, and the number of questions received was more than FOSA can remember receiving for any webinar they’ve sponsored. Following the webinar, additional questions continued to be received via e-mail. The interest in FTS is clear, and for good reason. It provides operators and system integrators with the ability to continuously track trains, utilizing fewer operations, resources and maintenance. In addition to train tracking, FTS can be utilized for asset condition monitoring, and safety and security applications.

The webinar’s venue was very appropriate, as Frauscher Tracking Solutions FTS is based on Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology, the reason FOSA came into existence. Frauscher is a founding member of FOSA, supporting the relevancy of fiber optic technology for the future, and its increasing potential for railroad applications.

About our experts

Mr. Caroli has 20 years of experience in the railroad industry, developing businesses for US and European companies. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering, and has headed Frauscher’s US operations since its inception in 2015. Mr. Rosenberger has 18 years of experience in railway and signaling technologies, holding degrees in Mechatronics and Business and Plant Construction. He joined Frauscher in 1998, and assumed his current role in 2011 focusing on development and innovations in axle counters, inductive sensors and DAS at Frauscher Austria.
